Guest Post by Author James P. White!

From the blog I Am Everyone I Meet, author James P. White has stopped by to contribute a guest post to the blog. His post comes in the form of an insightful vignette entitled, Vice President of a Bank.

“I was Vice President of a bank,” the well dressed man whom I’ve struck up a conversation with at the health food restaurant says.  We sit side by side in the little place. Our orders are being prepared.
“One day I decided I would do more than just make money. I quit my job and spent months in meditation training with some of the most knowledgeable people in the world. Now I teach businessmen how to meditate.”
“Do they like it?” I ask.
“They do.  I know where they are coming from. Their lives are so busy they forget how to go quietly into themselves.”
“Is that where you go when you meditate?”
“I think so, yes.” He is a handsome middle age man who keeps in shape.
“That’s a wonderful thing to do,” I say. “Do you miss business?”
“No,” he says, “not at all. The people I teach are quite successful in their fields.”
He didn’t have to tell me they pay top dollar to learn to meditate. To do it for free wouldn’t be worth their time.
“Where do you teach them?” I ask.
“All over the world,” he says. “Many are CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies.” He nods at the young man who brings his salad. I see mine coming.
He continues to talk as we eat. “The world is so filled with stress that most of us just don’t see each other anymore,” he says. “We put our priorities first. Whatever I can do to change that is important to me.”
“And to all of us,” I say. Quite suddenly, without thinking out what I am doing, I take a dollar bill out of my pocket. I put it on his table. “Here,” I say, “I want to give you this.”
He is taken aback. It is obvious a dollar bill doesn’t mean much to him. Nor does it to me.
            “No, no,” he says.
“I want to give it to you.”
He shoves it back. “Thanks, but I don’t want it.”
“If I go to the park and hand it to any homeless person, he will thank me for it,” I say. “He will appreciate my generosity and even love me for it sometimes.”
            The man doesn’t answer.
“The homeless man wouldn’t be too proud,” I say.
He smiles uneasily. He focuses on his eating.
I do, too. There is probably no excuse for my being so rude. Whoever said meditation was about caring for others anyway? But isn’t it about opening up to the world?
I hurt his feelings, but I wanted to point out the generosity of the homeless. They will freely take a dollar from someone and give thanks in return. We shouldn’t take this for granted.

The Examiner

From The Examiner Written by Yeni Alvarez
Exhibition Titled Perspective in Motion is Featured on the Huffington Post and Showcases Hockney-inspired Photo Collages and Paintings Highlighting The Artist’s Love of Vivid Color and Form Altered by Light
Artist Christopher Jules White explores the intersections of vivid color, light and form in PERSPECTIVE IN MOTION, a collection of photo collages and paintings on display at the Gregory Way Gallery in Beverly Hills. The exhibition of the Texas native’s work opens with a special reception at the Gallery on Saturday, March 26 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and runs through April 30, 2011.
“I use images and colors instead of words when I express myself because both have different capacities than words do,” says White. “I am affected by light which alters color and form and allows me to see something in an individual way. This is what I paint—the very individual thing that I see because of the effect of the light. And capturing that individuality is the essence, I think, of what painting is.”
The exhibition is featured on The Huffington Post, with the Post’s Rajeev Goyal  saying this about the artist’s work: “White's bold photo collages of California, Japan, Switzerland and Alabama are Hockneyesque but very much his individual eye. They mark interesting truths about photography and experience, particularly in the large collage entitled ‘Japan at Rest.’ The elongated beauty of the oriental dining room with a spectacular view is a detailed and rich memory.”
The exhibition comprises pieces with subject matter ranging from places to still life and includes works such as Reflections of Form, a painting of the artist’s wife; and photo collages such as The Porch; Japan at Rest; The Gate; Wengen; andThe Typewriter.

I Am Everyone I Meet: Blog Hop

Today is the Blog Hop for I Am Everyone I Meet: Random Encounters on the Streets of Los Angeles, a novel written by James P. White. Jules White designed the cover art for this great piece of literary work, and you can read the following review, provided by another participant in the Blog Hop at the Writing Belle blog.

I AM EVERYONE I MEET: Random Encounters on the Streets of Los Angeles relates the spontaneous meetings that the author has with many strangers in the city. The LOS ANGELES TIMES states that "The people White talks to, because it is Los Angeles, come from all over the world. This makes the vignettes even more fascinating-the cab driver from Moscow...the Latino man who has learned Japanese... White approaches strangers with humor and respect...and has an instinct for gentleness." THE AMERICAN BOOK REVIEW says "With shutters open a whole world gone missing is revealed in James White's I AM EVERYONE I MEET." The book has 134 pages and is divided into many sections that can be read in any order. James White writes in his introduction that "Seeing the world as filled with strangers who threaten us or seeing it as filled with other people who are like us and who interest us, makes a difference."

This is a beautiful book written in a series of short vignettes, describing real-life encounters that Mr. White experienced on the streets of Los Angeles. White is a brilliant writer. 'I Am Everyone I Meet,' is fascinating not only because it is written by an amazing writer, but because all of the stories within are completely true. I recommend this book to everybody. Mar Yvette Talks about Art

From MarPop:
I’m no art critic, but I know when I like something, and artist Christopher Jules White’s  richly hued, visually multi-textural photo collages are just the kind of thing that remind me not all contemporary art is graffiti and debris.
The official word on the artist’s Los Angeles debut, “Perspective in Motion,” is that the collection of collages and paintings “explores the intersections of vivid color, light and form.” I say they’re just really cool Hockney-esque works of art that make me want to keep looking. (The inspiration is no surprise: White’s father, novelist James White, is a good friend of David Hockney.)
“I use images and colors instead of words when I express myself because both have different capacities than words do,” says White. “I am affected by light which alters color and form and allows me to see something in an individual way.”

The Huffington Post's Review of Jules White's Art Exhbition

From the Huffington Post:

White's bold photo collages of California, Japan, Switzerland and Alabama are Hockneyesque but very much his individual eye. They mark interesting truths about photography and experience, particularly in the large collage entitled "Japan at Rest." The elongated beauty of the oriental dining room with a spectacular view is a detailed and rich memory.

Several of these collages have been featured in magazines or on book covers. One of them, "The Porch," (used for the cover of the book "Observations Without Daddy") was chosen as one of the "20 Coolest Book Covers of the Year" by the Huffington Post. White's paintings show an underlay of honed talent in drawing and composition.
White is an Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech University and has been represented by galleries in the South and Southwest. He has had numerous exhibitions outside California.
